SINGAPORE: Police arrested 25 drink-drivers in a five-hour ring-fence operation on Thursday.
In the operation at about 2.30am, officers from Traffic Police set up simultaneous road blocks along Church Street, South Bridge Road, New Bridge Road and North Canal Road to ring-fence the cluster of entertainment outlets and drinking haunts in the vicinity.
The breathalyser test was administered to some 75 motorists, of whom, 25 failed and were arrested.
They were mostly men.
Those arrested are aged between 22 and 53 years old.
The alcohol level for some was found to be more than twice over the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
But police said those who don't exceed the limit could still be liable for a drink driving offence if they're unable to control their vehicles properly.
Drink drivers, on conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000, or jailed up to six months.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years. They may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused.
These motorists will have to undergo the theory and practical tests in order to get their driving licences again.
Traffic police also reminded all revellers not to drink and drive, ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities. They said drink driving is irresponsible and can result in severe consequences or even death.
